Mind Science Foundation convened a scientific conference in 2012, in Rockport, Maine, that brought together a diverse group of participants working on both human and animal models of consciousness from around the world. The meeting provided participants with unique opportunities for sustained interaction and the development of new ideas. Also prominent on the agenda was the need for the scientific community to develop effective communication strategies that are accessible to a general audience about the intensely creative nature of scientific inquiry, without “dumbing down” the complexity inherent in the research process.
A scientific article generated from the meeting was subsequently published in the online journal, Frontiers in Psychology. With nearly 20,000 views, the article is amongst the highest ever scored in this journal (ranked #28 of 1,912).
Videotaped interviews with meeting participants can be viewed on our YouTube channel.
The participants included Steven Laureys, Ph.D. (University of Liege, Belgium); David Edelman, Ph.D. (formerly of the Neurosciences Institute, now at Bennington College, Vermont); Melanie Boly, M.D., Ph.D. (University of Wisconsin, Madison); Melanie Wilkie, Ph.D. (University of Goettingen, Germany); Nao Tsuchiya, Ph.D. (Monash University, Melbourne, Australia); Bernard Baars, Ph.D. (Society for Mind-Brain Sciences, New York); Anil Seth, Ph.D. (University of Sussex, Bristol, England); and Paul Ingmundson, Ph.D. (Chief Science Officer, Mind Science Foundation).
